Captive breeding and the conservation of the threatened houbara bustards

چکیده
Translocation of captive-bred individuals to reinforce wild populations may be an important conservation approach for some species, but can detrimental when employed boost exploited populations, particularly where repeated long-term reinforcement aims compensate unregulated offtake. We review evidence that captive breeding alters multiple physiological, life-history and temperamental traits through founder effects, genetic drift unintended adaption captivity; degrades learnt behaviours; compromises biogeography, population structure viability introgression. highlight these risks the globally threatened African houbara Chlamydotis undulata Asian C. macqueenii , 2 bustard species hunted throughout much their ranges now subject large-scale captive-breeding programmes translocations. In eastern Morocco, annual releases are 2‒3 times higher than original numbers, no investigation potentially deleterious effects has, our knowledge, been published, although most have replaced by domestic stock, which reportedly not self-sustaining. Despite decades reinforcement, we aware any analysis contribution dynamics, or genomic consequences. release also promoting rather preventing declines, need contextualise themselves rigorous analyses demographic rates threats, maintenance phylogeographic concordance released with supplemented profiling crucial survival measurement modelling impacts on physiological behavioural fitness populations.

The global amphibian crisis has resulted in renewed interest in captive breeding as a conservation tool for amphibians. Although captive breeding and reintroduction are controversial management actions, amphibians possess a number of attributes that make them potentially good models for such programs. We reviewed the extent and effectiveness of captive breeding and reintroduction programs for a...
متن کاملThe Economics of Captive Breeding and Endangered Species Conservation
There is growing concern that the traditional "protectionist" approach to conservation is expensive and fails to deliver the desired environmental outcomes. Encouraged by economists, “supply side” policies to conserve endangered species have drawn support. By generating supplies from captive–bred animals, wildlife commodity prices are expected to fall, thereby lowering the incentive to poach sp...
متن کاملPhysiological responses of Houbara bustards to high ambient temperatures.
Desert birds often experience a scarcity of drinking water and food and must survive episodes of high ambient temperature (T(a)). The physiological mechanisms that promote survival during extended periods of high T(a) have received little attention. We investigated the physiological responses of wild-caught and captive-reared Houbara bustards, Chlamydotis macqueenii, to T(a) values ranging from...
